Hi again,

I am using ReDJ to redirect links from slides on my homepage. The large banner module is a RokStories module (RocketTheme) that has "trouble" linking to the articles I desire. This should be solvable, I think, via a redirect. But while the redirect for the first slide works, the rest do not. For example, this URL:

www.zionadventures.com/component/content/article/333-rokstories/1572-rok-climbing.html

should be redirecting to here:

www.zionadventures.com/zion-park-tours/rock-climbing.html

I have this in the "From URL":

/component/content/article/333-rokstories/1572-rok-climbing.html

And this in the "To URL":

www.zionadventures.com/zion-park-tours/rock-climbing.html

But it's not working. This works for all other pages/links on my site, but not here for some reason (except for the first slide).

I hope I explained clearly. Please ask any questions you may have.

Thanks!
Nick

Hi Nick, just tested and it seems to work.

Is the problem solved?

Yes, Luigi, the redirect now seems to be working, though I haven't done anything else in the meantime. I feel like there is a delay sometimes, where I make adjustments, but the results don't change for an hour or two. I always am careful to clear cache, etc., but sometimes I still see these delays. Maybe that is what happened here? I'm sorry to ask for help and not need it... I don't intend to waste your time. Will try to avoid this in the future.

Best,
nick

Hi Nick,
first don't worry about my time. I never waste time supporting users (this is the Open Source and Community spirit, I think...).

The strange think is that you say you always delete cache. So, when the redirect is right, and the Joomla cache is empty, if you still get a "delay" there should be something else. First things I get in mind are:

1) Try to empty also the browser cache, and if you use Firefox / Chrome, repeat the test enabling the net trace (e.g. with HttpFox in Firefox). For your request the return code should be a 200 or a 301 if redirect works. If you get a "not modified" this is the problem.

2) If you are behind a proxy (e.g. you are at home and your company uses a proxy), then it could be the proxy that returns the cached version of the page. The way to check this is the same as exained before. In this case you should wait cache expiration or should use an http proxy (i.e. vtunnel), or should modify the request to add some directive for the proxy (a little bit tricky).

Let me know if you need more help.

Best regards,
Luigi

Hi Luigi,

Thanks for your comments. I have added HttpFox and tried using it a little. I don't understand all the data that pops up when I use it, but I see the "Result" column you're referring to and I can try using this next time I get that funny delay. It only happens occasionally, though, so I can't "test" it at the moment.

I do notice that when I load my site, there are a LOT of http requests. How many requests is too many? Maybe this is why my site takes so long to load. It actually loads quickly on my machine (probably due to caching?), but when I try on other machines, it takes maybe 5 - 10 seconds to fully load. Is this related to all those http requests?

Thanks!
Nick

Uuhmmmmm,
well, it's hard to say which is the "maximum" load time to consider site slow. A common rule of thumb is that your pages should be completely loaded under 5 seconds, but this can be highest for heavy pages. The best rule you can follow is to make your pages as fast as possible.

The number of requests (of course) increases page's load time, but there are some "tuning" actions to reduce/solve this. Most of these are "one shot", but you should always check for the speed of new pages so, this optimization process (just like the SEO one) never ends...

Best regards,
Luigi
